| North and South Pender Islands lie between Vancouver and Victoria, below the 49th parallel, close to the US/Canada border above the San Juan Islands. The two Penders are joined by a scenic bridge over the canal that links Bedwell and Browning Harbours. The Penders have several open farm areas, many roadside stands selling summer produce, a lovely nine hole golf course, not to mention many public beach access points and walking trails.
On North Pender, the best beach access points are Hamilton Beach on Browning Harbour and Medicine Beach on Bedwell Harbour. On South Pender, Mortimer Spit is a favourite sunny spot on Browning Harbour just across the canal bridge. As well, beaches at Craddock Road and Gowland Point offer a close look at some of Pender's interesting rock formations. Freshwater swimming may be enjoyed at the south end of Magic Lake and at Roe Lake.
The Driftwood Center offers a grocery store, bakery, bank, gift shop, liquor store, insurance office, pharmacy, post office, real estate office, hair salon, laundromat, service station, and a farmers market onSaturday mornings. Restaurants, a library, NU-TO-YU, craft shops, a building supply center, other retail outlets, and grocery stores are located in other areas of the island.
Some of the popular events that take place on and around the islands are the Around Pender Sailing Race, International Disc Golf Tournament, Home and Garden Tour, Art Show, Fall Fair, Dog Show, Talent Night, Garden Party, and Theatre Productions.
A medical clinic with doctors, dentist, optometrist, health nurse, physiotherapists, chiropractor, acupuncturist and oriental medicine are available. There is also a veterinarian, volunteer fire departments, police, an emergency helicopter landing pad, ambulance, water taxi and private airstrip.
